What is a CSA?
A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is a summer-long subscription for a weekly bag full of fresh, spray-free, locally grown veggies grown by farmers with refugee backgrounds here in the Treasure Valley. By joining a Global Gardens CSA, you are supporting small-scale farmers, strengthening our local food system, and guaranteeing yourself some of the healthiest, tastiest produce around.
Secure your 18 weeks of produce by signing up on February 20! |
Choose CSA, Choose Community
Joining a CSA is the most direct way to receive local produce and support your farmer neighbors. The vegetables you receive are harvested within a day of CSA pick-up and are washed, packed, and delivered to your home or pick-up locations by the Global Gardens farmers who grow the produce. Even local farmers markets require an extra step, but a CSA is as close to farm-to-table as it gets. We strive to create a stronger connection between farmers and the communities they feed. Becoming a part of our CSA allows you to interact with the farmer growing your food and develop a deeper understanding of small-scale farming and our local food system. Know your farmer, enjoy your veggies, and see the impact your dollars make right here in our community. Paying for your share upfront allows farmers to purchase seeds, supplies, and other necessities for the upcoming season before any income can be generated. In exchange for this commitment, your "share" cost reflects a portion of the to-be-grown vegetables over the following summer. This model allows farmers to confidently invest in their businesses and provides financial security throughout the season. |
How It Works:
When visiting the registration form, available February 20, you'll be prompted to make several choices regarding your CSA. First, Size. We offer a Half share and a Full share option. A Half share contains 4-6 vegetable varieties each week, while a Full share will get you 8-10 selections. Both options get picked up weekly. Then, Payment. You have the option to pay for your share either in full at time of purchase, or in recurring payments throughout the season. Recurring payments will be charged in four equal installments: the first on the day you sign up and the following on the same day of the next three months. Lastly, Location. We offer multiple pick-up locations around the Boise and Meridian areas, as well as a home delivery option. Having multiple locations, times, and days of the week allows you to select the location that works best for you and your lifestyle. Please note that the home delivery option includes an extra $6/week delivery fee, and if you live outside of a 5 mile radius from Downtown Boise, you will be subject to an increased delivery fee based on your location. |
About the VeggiesYou will be receiving an assortment of the freshest, most in-season veggies that will rotate throughout the summer. Here's a non-exhaustive list of what may be included in your CSA shares by month: June: Lettuce mix, spinach, swiss chard, arugula, collard greens, radishes, turnips, beets, peas, onions, garlic, bok choy, dill, cilantro. July: Lettuce mix, carrots, kale, peas, green beans, zucchini, peppers, beets, cucumbers, potatoes, cherry tomatoes, onions, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, basil, kohlrabi. August: Cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, summer squash, corn, peppers, eggplant, basil, tomatillos, onions, leeks, cabbage, kale, green beans, potatoes, parsley, leeks, spinach. September: Tomatoes, zucchini, tomatillos, cucumbers, corn, peppers, eggplant, melons, onions, leeks, winter squash, pumpkins, lettuce, spinach, herbs, cherry tomatoes, arugula. In addition to the veggies you know and love, Global Gardens farmers will occasionally share an African vegetable from their home country. This is a special opportunity to try something culturally unique and new, and we'll provide a recipe or guidance on how to prepare it. Enjoy! |
Picking Up Your ShareWe work hard to grow your veggies from the ground up, it is your responsibility to make it to your pick-up location within the designated time frame each week. If, however, you need to pick up your share late, you will need to reach out to our Food Hub Manager, Genny, at least the day before your pick up. With prior notice, we can hold your share at our main farm site, located near the I-84 Orchard exit, which you'll be able to pick up at your convenience any time following your CSA day. Alternatively, you can opt to donate your share or send a friend or family member in your place, just have them use your name. If you simply forget, sorry, you'll have to wait for next week. Once you select your CSA pick-up and the season has begun, we are not able to change your location. Cancellation of a CSA membership is reserved only in the case that the customer moves out of town, and will receive a refund of 50% of the remaining weeks in the CSA season. If you are dissatisfied with the quality of any vegetables in your share, reach out to Genny and we'll do our best to make it right. |
About our Prices
The price of our CSA shares are based on the actual cost of seeds, production, cultivation, supplies, time, packaging, and site delivery.
We pride ourselves on having the most accessible price point for CSA options in the Treasure Valley. A primary goal of our CSA program is to get high quality produce to as many members of our community as possible, and we take this into consideration highly when determining share cost each season.
As prices for most everything from gas to groceries have increased in the past year, it is known that folks with lower incomes and smaller profit margins are hit the hardest by these effects. Global Gardens farmers, and farm workers in general, heavily rely on their seasonal income to sustain them and their families throughout the year.
In order to sustain our CSA program, farmer success, and the ability to continue providing our community with fresh, local produce, we need to ensure that farmers are appropriately compensated for their time and efforts.
Thank you for your commitment to small-scale farmers, your refugee neighbors, our collective local food system, and vibrant, diverse, healthy communities!
